Long Island: Apple Cider
Long Island is really different. I love it and loathe it all at the same time. In the short time we’ve lived here, we’ve made some really great memories east of the boroughs. We have a family tradition of trekking all the way out to Northfork, every October. It’s about 6 hours roundtrip (it should only be 2…thanks traffic). There’s a lovely farm that we visit and spend the day drinking cider, sipping wine and watching the kids play. It is magical. The first year we were there, Wade had gone off to the winery to buy a bottle for us to share. Eli was about 6 months old and Jayne was almost 2 years old. There was a sandbox. We sat Eli up in a tiny chair and he was doing so well holding himself up. Wade asked me to hold a glass so he could pour some wine for me. Just as he started pouring, Eli fell face-forward into the sand. We definitely got judged. Our baby had a face full of sand and we were busy pouring wine. We felt terrible, but now we can laugh at it. In fact, this year, we made him pose in the sandbox with the bottle (see the photo below). Yes, we got judged…AGAIN.
Anyway, you haven’t had apple cider until you’ve had FRESH apple cider. It’s so simple and so warming. This is my favorite recipe to make at home and its all-natural (no added sugar). The best part?! You can add your own adult twist. I recommend bourbon or champagne!!!
- (1) Orange, peeled and cut into chunks
- (2) Granny Smith apples, quartered
- (2) Honeycrisp apple, quartered
- 1 Tbsp allspice
- (3) Cinnamon sticks
- 2 Tbsp honey
Place all ingredients in a large pot and cover with water. Cover and simmer on low for 5-7 hours. Remove cinnamon sticks and press/mash fruit. Continue to simmer for 1 more hour. Strain mash through cheesecloth and squeeze the juice into a pitcher. You can serve as-is, or refrigerate it for up to 1 week. It’s delicious and refreshing cold! You can also add a splash of bourbon or some champagne for Apple Cider Mimosas! Get cozy!
