So, my birthday was fantastic.  I don’t want to take away from that in any regard.  In fact, I was pleasantly surprised when President Obama announced his support for gay marriage.  I am proud of that.  In 2012, it’s difficult for me to see how someone could view the denial of gay marriage differently from the racism that plagues our country’s history or, even the holocaust, with a broader scope.

Humans are humans and all of us should have equal civil rights in the eyes of the law.

If you don’t agree with that basic statement, you can stop reading because I can assure you that you will find nothing sensible in this blog entry and I have no urge to sway your opinion.  I will continue to pray for you as I pray for all of my family and friends on a daily basis.

This country was founded on freedom of religion.

If you don’t agree with this basic statement, here is another warning – STOP READING.  There is no “argument” to be had.  We will simply disagree and I can live with that…I hope you can, too.

When it comes to gay marriage, I believe the law should be “color-blind.”  In this case, “color” is synonymous with sexuality.  The law does not determine what your God(s) or my God(s) prefer.  Religiously, I believe that biblical marriage is between a man and a woman, but I cannot righteously live the dream of or reap the benefits from a country that was founded on freedom of religion and argue that a man cannot legally commit himself to a man, or that a woman cannot legally commit herself to woman in a loving relationship – have a civil union.  I would sure hate to think that all of this hate is over a technicality.

First of all, we are looking at a choice made by two adults of their own free will.

Secondly, we are looking at a loving commitment.

Thirdly, it is not for humanity to judge.

If you so believe that your God is against “gay marriage,” let HIM judge accordingly.  I can assure you that it won’t be done on a political stage and to use Republican v. Democrat is ignorant.  It is out of fear that we create labels and fear is of the enemy.

Fourthly, are HIS Commandments not perfect, as is?

And, lastly, to think that support of a loving commitment between two adults of their own free will is a negative thing, especially in this day and age, is a complete mis-prioritization values.  Let’s worry about breeding hate, poor health and lack of education before we attack what can loosely be considered “the American dream.”
