The following blog post is from another (Personal Blog) that I keep.  this is a “speech” for lack of better words that I gave to the outside sales staff on…

who should we ask?

WORK DOESN’T STOP FOR LIFE AND LIFE DOESN’T STOP FOR WORK.

WE HAVE TO FIND WAYS TO MAKE THEM BALANCE AND, IF WE’RE LUCKY, COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER.

LET’S TALK ABOUT SOME ISSUES THAT WE DEAL WITH ON A DAILY BASIS…WHAT ARE THEY?
-CAREER
-FINANCES
-HOME
-FAMILY
-HEALTH
-PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS

HOW MANY OF YOU ARE DEALING WITH AT LEAST 1 OF THESE ISSUES MORE THAN NORMAL RIGHT NOW? 2? 3?

OKAY, WE DID THIS BECAUSE I HEAR FROM EACH OF YOU EVERY SINGLE DAY ABOUT OTHER THINGS GOING ON OUTSIDE OF WORK. I ENJOY THE FACT THAT YOU GUYS FEEL COMFORTABLE SHARING WITH ME AND I DON’T MIND SHARING PERSONAL THINGS WITH YOU. I THINK THAT’S QUITE OBVIOUS. I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT I’M SENSITIVE TO THE ISSUES THAT EACH OF YOU ARE DEALING WITH.

-I’VE BOUGHT A NEW HOME FOR THE VERY 1ST TIME
-I’VE HAD FAMILY THAT HAS BEEN VERY, VERY ILL

I NEED YOU TO REMEMBER, YOU ARE NOT THE 1ST, ONLY, OR LAST PERSON TO EVER HAVE THESE OBSTACLES OR “CHALLENGES” PUT IN YOUR WAY.

WITHOUT GOING TOO MUCH FURTHER, I CAN EASILY SAY THAT I HAVE GONE THROUGH SOME OF MY MOST TRYING TIMES IN MY PAST TWO YEARS WITH THE RANGERS. THAT BEING SAID, I’VE ALSO FOUND THE MOST SUCCESS AND THE MOST HAPPINESS.

BEING ABLE TO OVERCOME ADVERSITY IS WHAT SETS A LEADER APART FROM THE CROWD. WHEN YOU BREAK IT DOWN, WE ALL FACE THE SAME ISSUES…CAREER, FINANCES, HOME, FAMILY, HEALTH AND PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS.

A LEADER DEALS WITH THEM AND EVERYONE ELSE GETS DEALT WITH. YOU MAKE A CHOICE EVERY MORNING ON HOW THESE THINGS ARE GOING TO AFFECT YOUR DAY. I KNOW THAT NOT EVERY CIRCUMSTANCE IS EQUAL BUT, I DO TRUST YOU TO DEDICATE THE APPROPRIATE AMOUNT OF TIME TO HANDLE IT AND MOVE ON SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO BE SUCCESSFUL TOGETHER.

YOU GUYS KNOW I HAVE QUITE A BIT GOING ON RIGHT NOW, PERSONALLY. I HAVE CHOSEN TO BE PRETTY OPEN ABOUT IT BECAUSE, IN MY EYES, THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO BE. I’VE BEEN OPEN AND HONEST WITH YOU AND I’VE BEEN OPEN AND HONEST WITH MY SUPERVISORS. I HAVEN’T DONE THIS IN HOPES OF LOWERING EXPECTATIONS.

LET’S BE HONEST, WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FIRST THING THAT GOES THROUGH DAN’S HEAD IF YOU TELL HIM YOU’RE HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME WITH SOMETHING, YOU’RE SICK, ETC.?

?????

IT’S ALONG THE LINES OF, “I DON’T CARE. IT BETTER NOT AFFECT YOUR WORK.”

EVEN WHEN HE DOES CARE…

WHAT SPORTS DID YOU GUYS PLAY???

HOW DID YOUR COACH PUSH YOU? WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT WORK OUT YOU EVER HAD?

NOLAN SAID IT AT A CHAMBER LUNCHEON A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO…
“THOSE COACHES DON’T HAVE 2-A-DAYS FOR FUN. THEY WANT TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DOING.”

SINCE WE ARE NOT PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES, THIS IS HOW WE DO IT:

WE DEAL WITH LIFE WITHOUT MAKING EXCUSES. LET’S BE PROFESSIONAL PROFESSIONALS.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF YOU FIND THAT THE BIGGEST SUCCESS IN ONE ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE COMES WHEN YOU ARE SUFFERING DEEPLY IN ANOTHER. SO, DO THE BEST YOU CAN TO BALANCE THE ISSUES, AND WHEN YOU CAN’T, DON’T EXPECT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE TO PAUSE
