5 miles.  ???

I had a major malfunction with the watch today.  Apparently I never restarted it when I stopped it at an incredibly long stop light.  There is nothing more frustrating than to look down to try and gauge your pace only to realize that you never restarted the damn thing.  Maybe I did it sub-consciously so I could run slower.  Maybe it really did slow me down because I wasn’t able to check my pace.
Was the watch malfunction a product of my slow running?
Was my slow running the product of my watch malfunction?
These are questions that we’ll never know the answer to.  The only important thing to know about tonight’s run is that is was 100 degrees when I left the house at 6PM.
Work went well today.  I’ve been involved in some high-level negotiations and when I say “high-level” keep in mind that I’m only 5’3″ so “high” really starts at about 5’9″ for me.  Basically, that means relatively high for a midget.  In any case, I’m in a little over my head.  I feel like I’m taking an economics and an accounting class all at the same time.  I’ve learned so many new words this week:
Proprietary
P & L Responsibilities
Loss Leader
the list goes on and on.  I took my new reps out to lunch today and that was fun.  It’s amazing how getting out of the office setting really changes the social dynamics within a group.  I was happy to get to know them on another level.  They were put in a really tough position when I came on board and they have been nothing but helpful.  I am very thankful for that, but I must say that I do miss the youthfulness of my last group.  The good thing is that there is a lot of hiring to be done…I’m going to bring down the average age of the current staff a good 20 years.  That should be fun 🙂  It’s also really cool to think that I’ll be giving away $100k jobs.  That’s a big deal.  $100k in  year!  It is really amazing to see people achieve that accomplishment and I’m looking forward to it.
If you can’t tell, today was a pretty okay day at the new office.  I really want to give it a fair chance, but it’s just not the easiest thing in the world to do.
It’s amazing how the days flow so much differently there.  I get to the office around 8:15.  Nobody else is really there until 9 and the other members of the mgmt team don’t usually arrive until 10 or 10:30 (that’s just CRAZY to me).  Anyway, I have a staff meeting at 9am every morning.  Same rules as always; if you’re late, you bring breakfast.  We work on scripts, role plays, goals, and other things.  It’s a great time for teambuilding because it happens subtly over time.  I mean, if you sit in a room with 4 other people every morning for long enough, you’re going to find some commonalities.  So, that lasts until about 9:30, maybe 10 depending on how many questions are asked.
This is the view from my fishbowl…magnificient!
After that, I go back to my fishbowl cube and check my gmail, MSNBC, Perez, DListed, WWTDD, cnn and any other website that I feel like I need to get information from (don’t judge the gossip sites…I have tried to quit many times).  That lasts about 30 minutes.  This week, I’ve decided to shadow a couple of different departments so I use the time between my web surfing and lunch to do that.  Today, I spent some time in the warehouse and found a few things that I think I can fix that will increase profit and make the warehouse staff more efficient.
Great example of something I didn’t need from Wal-Mart.
They were only $7.  That’s a steal, folks!!!
I try to go to lunch really late so that the afternoon flies by.  Somehow, that never happens.  I guess I usually leave between 12:30 and 1.  I always leave.  It’s just too dreary of a place to stay there all day long.  I have been going to Chick Fil A and eating in my car…glamorous.  I will typically swing by Wal-Mart to pick up an item that I don’t need and then I sit in the parking lot and play Words With Friends on my phone.  That takes up an hour and then I head back to fishbowl.
This gets me to 1:30/2.  I pretty much spend the next 2-2.5 hours counting down until our 4PM staff meeting.  Yes, my staff meets twice a day and, yes, it’s because it helps the day go by faster.  Those couple of hours drag on forever, every single day.  There is nothing that will fix those two hours.  I do my afternoon web surfing which consists of all the sites I check in the morning plus a visit to bored.com for a little game called “boomshine.” It’s simple, but oddly relaxing and I love it.  I play a full 12 rounds and write down my score to see if I can beat my personal best which is 258.  This takes about 20 minutes.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I check my work email constantly throughout the day, but haven’t been getting any emails because everyone has been sending emails to someone named Cody Dotson.  He worked there many years ago and his name was never taken out of the system.  They just knew my first name and assumed that it must be me.  Weird.  We just found that out today so emails are starting to trickle in.  Back to my schedule…
I check reports, make the agenda for the PM meeting and then, at 3:45, I go on official countdown.  I would never want to be late for the 4PM so I sit at my desk, stare at my computer and literally watch the clock.  If I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll make a trip to the restroom.  Unfortunately, this never seems to last more than 120 seconds.  It’s a shame.  So, it’s 3:47………….BAM 4 ‘o clock.  I’m in that conference room!
Our meeting lasts until about 4:30.  I go back to my desk, answer questions, play another game of boomshine and it’s time to hit the road for my 27.2 mile trip home (I checked it on the odometer today).
Okay, that’s all I got for now….
Many Blessings.
OH!  ONE MORE THING…
Special thanks to my mentor!  She’s the one who got me into TNT and I’m incredibly thankful to have had this program to be accountable to over the last 3 turbulent months of my life!  Really, KC, thank you so much!!!
